Both as a patient and as a therapist. In my opinion the most important component of a therapeutic relationship is rapport, which is built on trust and a capacity to engage in difficult themes. The research on the subject shows that development of rapport doesn't seem to be dependent on the therapist's training, experience, or degree.
Point is, it might be better to find someone you can trust enough to go to uncomfortable places, it can sometimes some trial and error to find a good fit.
