My grandpa was frugal - which is a huge understatement.
He had post-it notes calculating how much it cost in electricity to use the toaster for 1 slice of bread, or how many fractions of a penny it cost in water to flush the toilet. He would do the dishes by taking the largest container and microwaving it full of water to heat it a little bit then use that as his "sink" of wash water for the remaineder of the dishes. (Cheaper to use the microwave for a small bowl of water than it was to run the hot water through the pipes until hot water came out of the sink and use natural gas to reheat the water heater tank). He would "ration" his breakfast. Every day the same meal: 1 egg, 1 slice of toast, 1/4 slice of bacon, and 4oz orange juice. He also would eat moldy soup by putting it in the pressure cooker to "sterilize it." The man died at age 87 with hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings so its not like he couldn't afford some luxury, but was more comfortable playing the "I'm cheap" game than he was spending even an extra penny than necessary (according to whatever made up rules he thought was appropriate).
