I knew Kresho at BYU and after. I know he turned down a huge offer to play in
the NBA to return to Yugoslavia as presiding elder of the Church. After my mission in Germany, my parents (Truman & Ann Madsen) and my little sister and I went to Yugoslavia and toured the country with Kresho to hold cottage meetings with the members he had baptized. Just spoke with my mom and she confirmed the outlines of the story at the top of this post (not the precise amount) and said Kresho’s oldest daughter has just published a book based on his journals (so that would be a good firsthand source). Kresho was a spiritual giant as well as a physical giant. He was a beloved friend of my dad and Hugh Nibley (brother Hugh was instrumental in Kresho’s conversion). And he was like an older brother to me. We lived in Virginia while Kresho and his family lived in Maryland when he served as assistant ambassador from Croatia in the United States and our families spent a lot of time together. During that time, Kresho died in 1995 of complications related to a bone marrow transplant for non-Hodgkins lymphoma (cancer).
