Here is a fact for you: BYU has an equipment deal with Nike.
Because BYU is a private institution we obviously dont know the details but we can make some assumptions based on how all of their public deals are done.

The deals typically include 3 items relevant to your gripe:

1. A payout to the school to be the official uniform provider. Nothing fancy here, its cold hard cash.

2. An equipment allotment. An annual amount of free product for athletic teams. This is everything. Shoes, uniforms, cleats, gloves, etc. They team can allocate how they want. Ohio St. in their agreement gets $5.9 million per year. Utah State who is on the opposite end of the spectrum is getting $2.4 million per year in free equipment. Safe to say BYU is somewhere in between which based on historical agreements, is easily enough to do a new special uniform every year. BYU appears to be pretty conservative with the fund however unlike USU and others like USF that roll out special and updated jerseys every year.

3. A percentage of net sales. Numbers I have seen shows this is between 10-15% usually. Nike takes on all the production cost and hands over a cut of the profits. So when you rollout a new color combo, nike produces fan apparel to go with it. We all rush to buy it and BYU gets another paycheck. All they did was use part of their already free equipment allotment.

I had to make some assumptions but unless BYU has a truly monumentally bad contract with Nike, they are coming out ahead based on dozens of publicly available agreements with other institutions. Its all out there. Just have to understand a little of how these deals work and what to look for.
