whether the Big 12 is ready for Utah."
I almost fell off my chair laughing at this statement. Here, the veteran PAC 12 writer, who still has egg on his face from predicting PAC 12 survival up until the very last second, just MUST continue to prop up his PAC 12 schools, even if it means suspending all logic and common sense. He has Utah at 1, Arizona at 4, and Colorado at 7. He has BYU clear down at 13.
I will literally eat a pile of dog poop if these projections turn out to be true. The only exception would be his Colorado prediction, which is the only one in the realm of believability.
Utah: Last year they lost 5 games (FIVE!). The season before that (their second Rose Bowl year) they lost 4 games. The season before that (their first Rose Bowl year) they also lost 4 games. In truth, Utah would not even have qualified for the PAC 12 title game in their first Rose Bowl year if BYU had been a member of the PAC 12. That was the year BYU beat them plus several other teams in the PAC 12 south division and was the de facto PAC 12 south division champ. The two years Utah won the PAC 12 title were down years for USC and Washington. Their first Rose Bowl year they lost to 3rd string Ohio State players who set Rose Bowl records. The next Rose Bowl they were utterly annihilated by Penn State. In other words, these Utah teams were not juggernauts...not even close. To assume a slightly above average Utah team is going to waltz in and run the Big 12 in Year 1, well, you've got to believe in fairy tales.
Arizona: They have been good for 1 (ONE!) season total in the last decade. The coach primarily responsible for that success left the program; he packed up and left for Washington. Arizona won't be the #4 team in the Big 12, and it's very possible they don't even make the top 10.
Colorado: They stunk last year...plain and simple. They opened the season with what seemed like promising wins, but then came back down to earth very quickly and finished toward the bottom of the PAC 12. It's possible they make a big jump this year. It's possible they land in the 7 range, but that would be about their ceiling in Year 2 of the Deion Sanders era.
It seems Wilner is auditioning to become a Big 12 writer or something. Please, dear Lord, don't let that come to fruition. Wilner's PAC 12 homerism (and anti-BYU bias) are just obnoxious. In 2021 he predicted BYU would be 0-5 against the PAC 12; they went 5-0.
Maybe it's time for Wilner to leave sports journalism and find a new profession. Sports prognosticating just isn't his talent.
