it did for Max Hall but not for Riley Nelson, Jake Heaps, Taysom Hill, John Beck
...etc. Max is the one BYU player who seemed to get it at the same level that Utah players and coaches do.

I think this is something that's hard for many yewt fans to see because they're part of it, sort of like that old saying, "Can't see the forest for the trees" but it's easier to see the difference in that culture and attitude from outside of it. Much like most BYU fans don't see that they typically have an attitude of entitlement or arrogance yet it's something I constantly read yewt fans pointing out about the culture at BYU.

I don't recall ever reading that SI wrote a feature proclaiming Utah the most hated team in America but they did BYU and one of the reasons listed was the perception and ultimate arrogance that BYU players and fans believe they are "God's University". That rankles people at an entirely different level. I've been on both sides of the fence on that one and understand it. Another reason listed is BYU having done what no other team outside a p5 conference has, that's win a National Championship. There's an intense hatred, envy and jealousy because of that as well. It feeds BYU players/fans sense of entitlement and arrogance and that in turn feeds the intense culture difference at Utah.

When you take that and add it to the fact that Kyle and a number of his staff are ex-patriate BYU turncoat players you can see that there's an attitude and culture at Utah towards BYU that is on a whole 'nother planet compared to BYU's attitude and culture towards Utah. Bronco's culture of Friday Night Firesides will never approach it. Doesn't mean that BYU players and coaches won't dislike Utah or not care about beating them. But because Kyle and many on his staff are BYU turncoats, this will always be more deeply personal and on an entirely different level than it will be for a coach who is from outside the rivalry.

No coach likes to lose, but when it comes to your former team, you want to lose to them even less. Once Kyle gets fired later this season and a new coach is hired you'll see in time that this element of the culture starts to fade and yewt players like Dres Anderson will start caring more about winning Pac12 games than they do BYU (providing Dr Hill doesn't continue targeting ex-BYU all-time great players to coach at Utah).
