I think the church knew that. They have a very skilled team of lawyers that understand that as well. 14th amendment gives the federal constitution precedence over EVERY state constitution. If it is felt that denying gay marriage is in opposition to the USC than there is no way a state amendment, decided by the people, will stand up under scrutiny. I have a hard time thinking the church wouldn't know that. Despite the outcome, I think the church's efforts were more to see who would follow the counsels of the leaders that they sustained.
