Here is why BYU doesn't compete with the top national programs very often...
...because this is NOT who we are. Its well documented that in TODAY'S college football business (which cannot be compared to the way it was in 1984) the top teams are all involved in at least two of the following practices:

1. Cheating in recruiting rules, and paying or bribing top recruits, including with loose women "hostesses" on campus.
2. Cheating on practice limitations, health and safety practices (steroids) in pursuit of winning.
3. Has very low academic standards for admission. (All the SEC teams, lots of Pac 12 teams, and all the other BCS teams).
4. Cheating on academics to keep athletes in school when they would otherwise flunk out. (UNC, pretty much every SEC team, all the top teams except maybe Stanford?)
5. Tolerates criminal violations, drug and alcohol offenses by top athletes (meaning they get to stay in school, unlike BYU).
6. Paying current athletes through boosters, agents, etc. (Miami, USC, Auburn, lots more)

If you think I'm wrong, I challenge those of you who have claimed BYU should be competing for a national championship to argue for ANY team in the past 10 years that finished ranked in the top 5 in any poll that has a clean record during the past 10 years.

My point is, I am proud of BYU because of who we are, and I don't expect that to change when Bronco leaves, and some new coach takes over. Every year we lose some of our most talented kids to honor code violations or academics, in addition to injuries. Given what we have left to work with, Bronco has done OK. Not great, but not bad, which is why I don't support calling for his replacement.

This resembles the "at least we're still better than they are" defense. (MatthiasG, Nov 20, 2014 at 6:38pm)
