I didn't get that extreme from the post...
...just that being competitive in football was more important than it appears to be now. For example a common criticism I read on CB about Bronco is that he thinks he's a Mission President instead of a football coach. Whether that's entirely true or not, it's understandable he might think that way after cleaning up the program when he took over for the previous coach. He's made the firesides a big feature of this effort to bring a spiritual development component to the program.

I think most people like the fireside element in developing character wtih the players. He's even shown some willingness to take a risk on a player with a checkered past now and again (Harvey Unga, KVN, etc) if they are willing to jump through certain hoops, but for whatever reason he is super selective and won't take just any LDS player no matter how good he might be. Would he take a Rob Morris, Brett Keisel or a Derik Stevenson who aren't squeaky clean Boy Scout types off the field but would be butt-kickers on the field and then try to use the spiritual development element to rub off their rough edges or would he just decide they were too rough around the edge and not offer them?

The spiritual development aspect of his program is a powerful influence and could have a huge impact on a lot of LDS players who have lost their way if he was willing to make it available to them. In turn their athleticism and ability could impact the results on the field in a positive way as well.

Elder Uchtdorf said it best, "He is not waiting to love you until after you have overcome your weaknesses and bad habits. He loves you today with a full understanding of your struggles." At times many wonder if Bronco has gotten that backwards and is too focused on finding perfect kids rather than finding kids he can perfect (knowing that not 100% will).
