From my vantage point I think he is well above average for BYU. Don't think any current D-1 coach could come into BYU, keep the BOT happy, have his players live the honor code and win any more than Bronco. Kryle could possibly achieve similar results, since he is familiar with BYU's culture and what makes it unique. But hard to know, since the players he is allowed to recruit at Utah are a very different bunch then what Bronco can recruit at BYU (both in willingness to live the honor code and the necessary academic ability).

When BYU starts passing over 3-star HS recruits at Running Back, Wide Receiver and CB because they already have plenty of them, then you can reasonably expect greater success than is currently being achieved. Until that time, BYU is going to be hampered by the honor code and their LDS recruiting base.

I would really love to see The LDS church have a college prep HS in both Ghana and Nigeria. If the coaching staff was allowed to place say 6 kids a year into each HS as a result of open tryout's for athletic ability for the LDS kids in those countries then in a few years we could potentially have a pipeline of kids coming to BYU that would be similar in ability to what the teams that we would like to beat have playing those positions. Wide receivers and running backs would need a year or two to learn some skill set, but CB's would just need to get the proper strength and conditioning and they should be able to contribute. Whether Howell could use talent like that is an unknown, but Bronco has worked with kids from outside the LDS recruiting base before.
