Lavell's a HoF coach. His legacy is secure. But what did he do after 85?
That was precisely my point. College football...and even pro football figured out how to pass too...and how to defend the pass.

Lavell changed the world. While he was doing it...and with far, far, far weaker schedules than Bronco has faced, etched his name in granite and got a stadium. Once the world caught up...BYU was BYU.

What has Bronco done? Well he's won at about the same percentage as Lavell...with much tougher schedules overall. He's finished ranked 5 of 10 years. He's done it with an Honor Code that is actually enforced now...and in a time of social media where no sin goes undocumented...hence no Honor Code violation goes unpunished. And he rescued the program from the Crowton era...and as a result of that era was schackled with a far more rigid set of requirements than Lavell had.

McMahon would have been gone the first week in today's era. No Miracle Bowl.

Since 1985 Lavell and Bronco are basically twins. A little different philosophy...Bronco's best teams have been built on defense...Lavell's on offense...but if you look at BYU records after 1985...after everyone figured out how to defend the pass...and pass themselves...BYU is BYU.

Lavell would have been tarred and feathered in today's social media age...likely by people on this board who always believe the grass is greener. It's not. The grass in Provo is the grass in Provo. You aren't going to make it Florida...or Florida State...or Miami...you're not going to make it SEC grass...It's not going to be SOCAL. BYU has very, very unique challenges. Bronco is far from perfect...but we are lucky to have him. We've seen with Crowton what else can happen...
