I don't fully buy into your hyperbole, but I can appreciate your inner dilemma.
Being a fan is a very strange concept. Generally, a fan has no input or power to effect any sort of change or outcome beyond dollars spent, eyes on TV, and tickets purchased - which has a very minimal impact individually. A fan also probably has no personal relationship with any of the players, coaches or others who are directly involved. Yet a fan follows and invests his time and energy into a team for various reasons, and for many Y fans, the reasons have to do with the school, the faith, and the past. However, this "following" and "investment" have everything to do with being entertained. It is sport. It is for fun.

When a fan stops being entertained, and finds himself perpetually frustrated by the product, he should, and will, stop investing. If BYU were terrible, the stadium would be empty, nobody would be on CB, and that would be appropriate. Nobody owes any investment to the school, to the faith, or to the past if the product doesn't entertain.

I watched the first four games last year as a very invested fan. The rest of the games? I caught some of them, watched replays of others, etc. This is what a fan is. Labels like fair-weather or asking "well, are you a fan or not"? Stupid. The only stupid fan is one that invests in a crappy product. You may as well put on a cilice and self-flagellate.

I'll always be a "fan" of BYU because of the school, faith, and past. To what extent I'll invest and follow going forward? Depends on how much I'm entertained.
