all but one of the current "P5" conferences now consider BYU a P5 opponent for scheduling. We are on TV more than most P5 programs, we might even make more money than some of the P5 bottom dwellers (probably not though) and we get to play whomever we want all over the country in front of fans who haven't historically been able to see BYU play. The exposure and resulting recruiting has been great. And this year we got to play in the Rose Bowl, the Big house and at Nebraska in the same year...few teams get to do that.
While we lack critical bowl access and don't' get big conference TV money, BYU is in a much, much better position as an Independent than we ever were part of the MWC. yes we have some growing pains and November scheduling is tough, but it would be a very tough sell to go back to a G5 conference and give up what we've gained.
Not a sleight at all against the ACC or ECU.
