Why does BYU so severely punish people that have public issues?
This is a part of BYU that has bugged me for years, practically all the rest the "outside" world considers any punishment for the majority of HC issues extreme, and yet BYU goes way beyond that when something becomes public.
BYU goes to far in protecting its image at the expense of people, there are so many examples over the years, Spencer Hadley....5 games for drinking alcohol, not underage...... that doesn't reflect badly on Hadley, that reflects poorly on BYU.

I haven't lived in Utah since college, and when Davies was suspended I had several people I worked with approach me genuinely confused as the suspension, as it was widely publicized the indefinite suspension was for having sexual relations with his GF, they seemed to appreciate that BYU stuck up for its moral foundation, but were genuinely confused at what seemed to them an onerous punishment for something that wouldn't be punished basically anywhere else, I was asked, there has to be something else right?...Nope, BYU seemed more like the Spanish Inquisition in their eyes than a place that stands up for morals.

BYU if you want to stop looking like JackYewts to 99% of America, over the top punishments aren't helping you, the only people that applaud that are the Pharisees and Saducees and BYU haters. I realize that BYU has a higher % of those types hanging around, and it may be to institutionally ingrained at this point, but this really irks me as a fan of not just the sports teams, but of BYU the institution and what it stands for and espouses.
