However- top swimmers in the world make a lot of money.... like $300,000+ a year from swimming. If a program and facility is run efficiently and correctly, it is self sustaining. The problem is too many people don't think like that because they don't want to care about it. They refuse to learn (that's their right). But swimming, and knowing how to swim is important. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children in the US. Why? Because lack of programs.
It is all trickle down- take away a college program, there is no desire for youth swimming to grow. Less and less kids join swim teams- which leads to more and more parent's relying on city run programs teaching their children how to swim (those suck). Swimming is one of the fastest growing youth sports in America.
