They have literally been promised this for more than 2 decades because the team fights for space with faculty, students and other programs. Remember the Tyler jaws fiasco at the rb basketball courts a few years back? That happens every single day with the pools. The s&d programs are behind students, faculty, scouts, and every program in terms of priority.
Les isn't renovated because it is used for 5 football games, stadium of fire and battle of the bands by high schools... 8 events a year (per Tom holmoe). Mc just got renovated too.
No one is saying that swim and dive is more important than football or basketball-- we're not even saying it's equal. We are saying that for 20 + years Byu made a commitment that they are not keeping. The coaches took that commitment by BYU into homes of every recruit. There have been many LDS swimmers chose other programs simply because of the facility. These athletes have been world champions and olympians for the US. They couldn't train for international competition at BYU.
It would be a completely other issue if BYU said "ok let's do it, but you need to fundraise half" and alumni couldn't. But there have been multiple individuals say they could raise 25 million in a matter of a couple months for the programs but BYU refuses to allow fundraising.
The other issue is that this downgrade won't be completed until December. The season runs august- February with nationals in march. Where do they train? No rec center can or probably wants to accommodate them because there is no room. Think of Byu football practicing at the same time as timpview, Provo and Spanish fork high school on the same field.
Smith field house is facing a similar issue-- and they are receiving the same treatment.
