BYU fans have this awkward expectation that if Utah doesn't run the table every year, it's somehow a massive disappointment and embarrassment.
Coming into the Pac-12, there is / was no way the Utes can compete with the likes of UW, UO, USC and UCLA for recruits -- or with money / prestige, etc..
Utah didn't start making significant strides in recruiting until after they started winning. Especially big games. The Utes are at least one season removed from a W against any of the elite Pac-12 members. (Except Stanford, but we still haven't lost to them.)
That, along with the NFL placement success is starting to give Utah an edge over some of the mid-tier Pac-12 schools. For the first time, Utah now has 3-star talent on the 2- and 3- deep. Even at QB.
UU is getting closer and closer to where they can compete for a championship, even in years like last year where we were overwhelmed with injuries. Or like this year where we travel to the Autzen, the Coliseum and to Seattle.
Just winning and staying ranked has helped Utah get to that point. So even in years where we don't win a championship, progress can still come if we win, place in the NFL and knock off a few big teams.
