Former player
As a former player on the volleyball team, I felt that I need to at least inform you that the things that were said and done at the games last weekend were probably the mildest and most harmless things that volleyball players ever experience from a crowd. To the byu players I'm sure it was all hilarious, because every weekend they travel they hear and see things a million times worse. Go watch a game at another school where byu is playing and all you will hear is vulgar, sacreligious and personal taunts non-stop.
I'm not saying that we should compare our standards to those of others in order to justify our actions; rather, I'm saying that the players from USC, if they experience even a fraction of what we as byu players experience, were probably laughing and hardly offended by any of those comments.
Athletes understand that those kinds of taunts are part of the game, and part of being a good athlete is not letting outside influences affect your game. Believe me when I tell you that nobody on USCs team left thinking that any of our fans are classless.
In fact, most of the teams in the country praise our fans, despite our cheers and jeers,. Baylor blew Twitter up after they played in the Marriott center, praising our fans for their class and respect. Yes, the fans held up a banner praising a Baylor football players achievement, but then accompanied the gesture with the normal slew of only-somewhat-rowdy taunts and jeers that anyone would expect from a BYU fan. USC themselves, well at least their coach, got ON CAMERA in the week leading up to the matches to tell THEIR fans about how awesome of an environment it is to play in the Field House. So stop worrying that people are leaving Provo with a bad impression based on something that a fan said during a game. It is very likely that the only people that were offended are the ones complaining about it here. If you don't like it, don't participate in it, and if it offends you that badly, remove yourself from the situation and watch on tv or something. The players like the fans to be into the game and to cheer and have fun and make both teams laugh. If that's a problem for you, there was almost 1000 people turned away Friday night that would have appreciated your seat.
