For one year, the QB and RB situation was excellent
and then BYU had average and below players left in both position groups. Jamaal and Brown were gone after 2016. You had Squally who ended up with an average career.
Mangum didn't progress under 2 different staffs. Detmer said it was a big issue that he couldn't read defenses. It was a whole new world with a worse receiving corps.
The bottom line is the cupboard was basically empty after 2016 at RB and QB.
