be doing a good job! So is EVERY other coach. It means NOTHING.
Sorry, but Tuiaki's schemes that he has been doing for less than a decade (he started coaching defense in 2013, although he was the Kearns HS outside Linebackers coach in 2006 so I guess he has that going for him-maybe that is where you got your decades comment from) are rudimentary and poor. That is a fact. I don't care how many hours he has put into them. They don't work! No one else he is supposedly talking to is telling him to do them because no one else is doing them.
Kalani comes on and tells us all that when he talks to other coaches and watches film the best defenses put pressure on the opposing QB. Then he watches as his buddy rush 3 and drop 8. Over and over again.
Let me put this another way so maybe you will understand. Tuiaki did NOT have a resume worthy of being hired by BYU as defensive coordinator and only made it by being friends with the new head coach. That is a fact. No one was looking at the job he did at either Utah or Oregon State with his 3 years coaching defense and thought I really want THAT guy (it should be noted that his 3 defenses were not very good and they were 16-21 in his 3 years coaching that side of the ball).
So what has he done since then? Not a whole lot of good. He inherited a good defense and finished decently in 2016. He had a good year in 2020 when we played outmatched opponents all year long. Every other year he has been below average in the NCAA in terms of points per possession. This year looked better through 3 games but has gone to crap really quickly. So why is he the coach? Because he has a friend.
