This is how players that underperformed or didn't win starting jobs last year explain how the team will suddenly be better this year simply because of matriculation and a new calendar. Bottom line is they didn't play at a high enough level to have great success and those that didn't win jobs last year flat out weren't any better than the starters/contributors who did play but didn't achieve at a high level.
It would be refreshing to hear continuing players be honest and own their situation. "You know, I didn't play well/a lot last year because I wasn't as talented/experienced/assignment sound/conditioned/strong as I needed to be/as the player(s) in front of me. I've worked hard in the off-season to improve my situation and I plan to play at the highest level I can this year. I expect to succeed individually and within the framework of our schemes."
