most are fresh off of missions, not a lot of coddling going on there
as for guys who don't want to work hard (or work hard enough), they flush out of the program every year. Why do you think JonRyheem Peoples, Tui Crichton, etc left the program? Tons of guys like that drop out all the time. Competition fixes those guys or it washes them out. Just look at the basketball team. Guys have lost scholarships because they haven't progressed like they needed to and their scholarships were needed for new recruits, it wasn't even about effort.

Go back through most recruiting classes and only about half ever see the field and even fewer than that make a significant contribution. That's the Peter Principle in action. Players compete for playing time, position on the depth chart or even to get a little time and attention from the coaching staff. It's up to the coaches to weed out the guys who can't cut it or won't cut it, not let them walk all over them.

If Howell can't get a bunch of respectful, clean cut, temple endowed, Eagle Scouts and Returned Missionaries to listen to him and work hard at BYU then he has absolutely NO business being a college football coach.
