Earning the respect of players and getting their buy-in is a crucial aspect of being a coach at any level. I don't buy the excuse that there are "bad apples". 80% of these guys are eagle scouts, former YM's quorum presidents, returned missionaries (AP's, ZL's, DL's etc), temple married guys carrying 3.0 or better GPA's.
It's not like he's trying to gain the trust of hardened gang members at the LA County Jail.
If he can't get a player's trust, respect and buy-in at a place like BYU maybe he needs to go back to coaching Pop Warner football. Really. If we could harness just a fraction of the energy that gets spent in covering up or trying to make up excuses for his failings, we could eliminate much of our need for foriegn oil.
Sheesh. Bronco needs to stop babying Howell and hiding him behind his apron. If Howell can't do the job he needs to find another line of work.
