...there definitely is a culture to his program going back to the Jimmer days. That culture worked because we had a mega-college star like Jimmer Fredette paired with a great 3 & D wing mate in Jackson Emery. Jimmer was allowed to slack on defense in order to save up energy for being the hero on offense. The offense ran through Jimmer and everyone else stood around adn watched him.

We've seen a number of players since that coaches have tried to fit into that role to one degree or another. Maybe some of those guys came to BYU with the intent on being the next Jimmer, maybe those expectations fell on them because they had some interesting skills but it hasn't really worked because none of those are Jimmer. We've had some players compile impressive career stats but at the same time we've seen the program slip from being a nationally ranked regular NCAA tourney participant into being a middle of the pack NIT team.

As a result we have players now who save their energy on D and so that they can spend it on offense looking for their shot and multiple players competing against each other to be the man.

ONce upon a time Dave Rose coached really good defensive teams at BYU despite not having great individual defenders. We held teams to very low shooting percentages and held them in the low 60s in scoring. That culture changed when we became more focused on rushing shots and just trying to outscore opponents.

Every coach needs to evolve as the game around him evolves. There's nothing wrong with Coach Rose (no matter how much success he had 10 yrs ago etc) staying ahead of the curve and changing the culture of the program or the way he does things.
