The thesis is not original or ground-breaking in any way. It's simple nutrition
fundamentals. If you don't have an understanding of the way simple carbohydrates are broken down and stored within the body, then it's probably a good idea to google and research the effects they have on your body (i.e. midsection) in the first place. And if you've never actually disciplined yourself to eliminate all of these (yes, all!) from your diet, then it's equally difficult to imagine the positive effects it will have on your body in such a short time.

The challenge of completely eliminating bad carbs and sugars is real. It's basically like a process of getting your body through an addiction - an addiction to garbage carbs - so for one who has mainly gained the extra lbs through poor eating choices and letting those compound over a period of months (after previously being pretty fit), then making a 5 week or so transition to clean eating will absolutely have the biggest effect on him getting that waistline back down.

The body is an amazing thing. It always wants to operate at its optimal, natural weight. This is true for almost all of us - regardless of height, current weight and even well into our later years. And so the body will quickly show the results and get there once the proper fueling changes are made. It's remarkable, but it requires serious discipline.
