I noticed that all of those incidents were in the context of an actual football game. Even the awful brawl and notorious throwing-trash-at-the-refs occurred IN A FOOTBALL STADIUM. Decent BYU fans, including me, were not proud of those moments.
And the late hits and punching at the ball, come on man, every team has those. It's part of the game and you're penalized for it. Should we bring out the "who's got the most personal foul penalties chart?"
Many of the incidents on the Yewt side that rankle BYU fans happen away from the field. The athletic facility baptisms and the jello shots. The Utah coaches and administration taking pot shots and attempting to disregard BYU as a quality opponent. Those seem calculated and uncalled for.
In my BYU fandom I have tried to engage in a friendly manner with the Utes I come across. A friend sees my BYU shirt in my LDS account, I tell them that's where I met my husband (this is Nephicoug's wife btw - this may be deleted). My son's friend flashes a Ute sign and I'll ask if he wants to attend. Hey, it's a good school.
In my opinion BYU is a better school. And I hope the Cougars cream the Utes in every athletic and scholarly contest while realizing we won't. But there's no need to resort to hate.
