Old People hanging on really is a massive drain. When the 90 year old with heart failure, diabetes, and kidney failure
comes in and the family "wants everything done" you can spend a a INCREDIBLE amount of money keeping them alive a few weeks or even days longer.
People don't die like they used to. They used to fall or get pneumonia at home and pass aways surrounded by family. Now they are brought to the ER and kept alive while the family agonizes over what care to allow or sometimes withdraw.
We are CAPABLE of keeping people alive well past when nature (or God?) would otherwise take them but it is extremely expensive.
