using mostly Crowton's recruits and feasting off weak schedules. Bronco did a great job filling the gaps that Crowton left, but the foundation was already in place for a special season starting in 2006 even if Crowton had remained the coach.
If Bronco had left after the 2009 season, he'd be a legend. Instead, his weaknesses were exposed and the team was slipping into mediocrity. Bronco will be remembered as a good coach with a high floor, but low ceiling.
BYU gambled on a first time coach and first time assistants and their inexperience plus the myriad of injuries contributed to last season's debacle. It's not the right time to gloat about Bronco during the low point of the program. We honestly don't know what the ceiling of the program is right now.
