Most people with auto immune or invisible disabilities are good at hiding them
It would be interesting to see your study results after they were complete. In my experience, I have found some of the most incredible, brave, and strong individuals through the Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis community. I am not referring to myself, so please don't take this as arrogance. Most of those that share the disease I deal with, have so many symptoms and issues, that we utilize every single minute of good days that we have. We try not to have too much negativity in our lives because negativity and stress will trigger flares. It can be a very painful and often, embarrassing disease. How many people talk about the bowels and bowel movements to others, as if it just normal talk? lol You have to have a sense of humor and block out the people that judge.
That being said, most will go through a phase of acceptance in which there are negative and depressing moments. It is very similar to mourning because so much of one's life is changed by a diagnosis and the side effects that come with chemo class medications. I went through it and while I had my rock bottom moments, I have had some of the most incredible moments of my life, too. When Coach Mendenhall had me come down for Thursday's Hero, I learned all about how I could use my disease as a platform for helping others. That experience showed me that i had a purpose and reminded me that there were others like myself, that were going through some dark times. I started a support group that has members from several states and countries, and those individuals have become some of my best friends. I am also part of larger groups, but that smaller group has gotten me through many difficult experiences.
I would never wish a disease upon anyone and I would never ask to have my disease, but i wouldn't trade the good lessons that i have learned about my self and life, for anything. My wife became a nurse after helping me recover from several surgeries and found her true calling in life. She is a top notch nurse and her company has invested a lot of money and time in her because of her skills and potential. She sees things in a different light because she has someone so close to her that is constantly sick and dealing with new symptoms each day. If you ever participate in another survey, such as what you mentioned, or need individuals to interview for one, please feel free to contact me. I would be proud to answer any questions and put you or others, in contact with some incredibly tough people .
