There’s mortality and there’s morbidity. Both are bad.
Vaccines, like any health care intervention aren’t all about mortality benefit. There are life altering sequelea of diseases that are debilitating and disabling but not fatal. Sometimes we try to avoid those non fatal effects. Like clearing grass clippings from a mower while the blade is running. It won’t kill you but you won’t ever be the same.
