and you might be surprised to know I share his philosophy on that although I’m not quite as risk adverse as he is. I think defense is the core, that is what wins games because if the other team can’t score they can’t win. You can ask anyone that coached with me, I put the best athletes we had on defense and defense was always my first concern.
But you’ve got to be able to score points so I got a great offensive coordinator, Chase Roberts dad Kyle, and I told him I would not interfere with the offense, it was all up to him and that is what Whittingham needs to do, butt out and quit putting shackles on them because that is what he does, and that’s not conjecture, he won’t let them run an offense that he considers to risky for his liking.
So while his focus on having a great defense first and foremost I agree with his inability to let the offense be more than a low risk low reward unit is his biggest weakness. It’s why they cannot take the next step, the one that puts them in the top tier.
