I was him way too many times. It's why I'm not very good.

But if it were my child, I'd essentially force him to go be honest about it, and make a plan going forward. Some of the other things I mention may be in play as well. Learning an instrument is dang hard, but eventually something clicks and it becomes really fun (for some people).
