Everyone talks about Washington passing on the opportunity to play BYU to prove it on the field. However, before the bowl games, that was not the discussion. Oklahoma was the #2 team and many expected to be the national champion. That was the team that people were talking about playing BYU in a bowl game. The invite went out to Oklahoma and they turned it down. It really wasn't until Washington beat Oklahoma in their bowl game that any discussions really serviced that Washington should be the national champ and should have chosen to play BYU instead of Oklahoma.
