It was a bad year for the PAC10 that year. Only one other team, USC, was ranked
and USC was 14th. Washington lost to USC and did NOT take the conference championship. USC did and played in the Rose Bowl. They did beat a highly ranked Michigan team early in the year. The bottom line, they only played two ranked teams and lost to one of them. So their schedule was easier than normal. The early win couldn't cover for the late loss. When you add that BYU lost the first game of 1983 and never lost again until 1985, making NC come at the end of 25 straight wins. How do you vote for Washington?

They were invited to play us in a bowl game to settle it on the field. Had they accepted there would be no question
