I have played more sports than anyone I know. Some people are ultra competitive

and some do it for fun. For some people they get a jolt of pride for winning a Tuesday night pickup game. Others only care when there is a trophy or championship on the line.

Yes, it's embarrassing for fans to assume that every D1 athlete will go out as hard as possible when there is literally nothing of importance on the line other than a 6 win threshold that garners a weak-sauce bowl. Psychology 101.
