It's important to figure out early on if you are a start up guy or big company
kind of a person.

I've worked at one big company and 4 startups (one of which became a big company by the time I left). The big companies weren't my style at all. I like doing lots of different jobs and being a little bit of a maverick. I'm very entrepreneurial and self-motivated. I like being able to "ask forgiveness instead of permission." I was miserable at the big company. Every great idea I had they said, "yea, we have to go through this level of bureaucracy and it will take 6 months," or "no that's too risky." They promote less based on merit, in my experience. Having said that, start ups have their draw backs in terms of risk, bad benefits, weird hours, and even corporate personalities that are more willing to accept risk. My start ups often had leadership with foul language and yelling and "hair on fire" mentalities because it was required to make payroll, and you aren't scared by HR. They were often disorganized and would do a ton of things but not do them well. Whereas at the big company, everyone was polite and cautious because it felt like they were worried about getting sued every step of the way. And much more politics at big companies.

There isn't a right answer, but you need to figure out what is the right fit for you.
At my most recent company, I joined when it was small (just under 200 employees), then we exploded to over 1000 and got acquired by a big company and I looked for an exit because I knew it wasn't a good fit for my personality. I just joined a company with 11 employees and I'm much happier.
