IMO the biggest sacrifice and risk for most is forgoing a college education. I'd
hope most of NCAA athletes who don't go pro don't end up on welfare, but that could be the case for a lot of failed prospects whether in the NFL or other pro teams if the motivation to play FB beyond high school is only money.
With how firmly rooted university sport tradition is in the US, I really see a sub-NFL struggling to take hold in most markets.
