Covid has thrown everyone for a loop. I'd suggest he gut it out another year. As far as grades go, I nearly flunked out of BYU my freshman year. It was influenced by social reasons completely opposite of your son's, but the transition to the rigors of hard work and long hours of study did a number on me. Sounds like your son is dealing with this as well. I had to plead my case to the academic support office on more than one occasion - even after my mission. School was just hard for me for many reasons, but I enjoyed the experience and loved the people I met. I graduated with a GPA much lower than 95% of the BYU grads on this board, but my GPA is a mere afterthought now that I've been employed for a few years.
Good luck!
