Good swimming facilities are expensive. The US has many more competition pools
than most countries. They are geographically dispersed well enough to provide opportunity to talented athletes.
Most countries, including the US, probably have many talented athletes that never get a chance to develop. We like to think that Olympic gold medalists are the best the human race can produce. However, chances are there lots of other people out there that are even more genetically gifted.
