I'm somewhere between where you are and where your son is.

I lose everything with some regularity. But I've managed to force myself into enough routines that I now have a handful of spots for most of my items. When I can't find them I just have to start going through them one by one. If I would just eliminate a few of the spots, I could really cut some time out of that process 🙂
