I guess it depends on how you define basic necessities.

What's the take home on 70K? The median home price in Utah is well over $500,000 now. How do you have 2-4 kids, save for a down payment, pay down 75,000 in student loans, and eat anything other than rice and beans with hand me downs for your kids on 70K? Want to sign your kids up for sports or other extracurricular activities? Sorry. Car breaks down and needs a costly repair? You're hosed.

I don't think 70K is a comfortable family income for someone just getting their family started who doesn't have some sort of outside family help. If you bought your home five years ago and got through school without any debt, possibly.
