Back to the OP. They thought they could flip that by damaging BYU and funding

Utah! They thought that by providing Utah favorable schedules and matchups they could help them produce a no success to obliterate Byu given the other actions they were taking.

Then BYU went independent successfully followed by admission to the big 12 and it’s all gone
