BYU has a fantastic base, but a few 100k more fans is not a difference maker in a billion dollar TV deal. BYU fans have this really awkward sense that no one cares about Utah. That's an odd argument.
Again, not taking anything away from BYU because that's a huge draw that will benefit the Big 12. But you can't ignore Utah's ability to draw viewers either.
The big audiences come from national games. Utah had 30MM viewers the last 4 games of this season.
Just because they weren't Utah fans specifically tuning in, doesn't mean Utah wasn't part of the equation. What Utah did in the MWC and has done well the last several years is stay ranked, climb into the top 10, have GameDay show up — and consistently participate in high profile matchups as a result.
2022 will mark the 9th consecutive season Utah has been ranked. In the last 15 seasons, 2022 will mark the 6th distinct season Utah has cracked the top 10.
Even if the assumption is that Utah has a small base, that competitiveness and consistency is going to start drawing more eyeballs. Utah has now been consistently one of the top 3 viewed teams in the entire west.
Competitiveness, particularly schools that can build elite teams on occasion like UU showed in the MWC, can offer tremendous value.
