someone different than everyone else is singled out for that difference, it can be difficult for that individual to address it, even among friends. "We're just joking!" is often the defense of those in the majority. But many non-whites growing up in Utah report uncomfortable comments and situations made by those in the majority.
I suspect that non-LDS kids, weird kids, abnormally tall kids, fill-in-the-blank kids, can all report similar situations about the thing that made them different. I'm not saying the impact is the same for all these situations, but that we can all probably do a lot better when dealing with everyone's differences.
