Belboz Intervention Needed
I sat on the back row of Mrs. Ienatsch's first grade class with Vickie Nielsen
at Liberty Elementary in Murray, Utah back in what must have been late 1976 or early 1977.
Vickie and I shared a table meant for 3 kids, but the other kid was absent that day so the two of us had the top of the table all to ourselves. Before long, Vickie apparently recognized that we also had the bottom of the table all to ourselves as well. What a lucky day!
I didn't know Vickie well at that point, but I learned that day that she was a gal who wouldn't let opportunity slip through her fingers without giving fate a chance. Soon after morning recess, she turned to me and offered, "I'll show you mine if you show me yours."
I was just a small boy of 6 or 7 years at that point, but I was adequately aged in the world enough to know exactly what that meant. I felt a rush of fear. How do I answer that question? I'm not dropping my pants for this chick, but I also don't want to be seen as chicken. As a 1st grade boy, that's about as bad as it can get.
After some quick mental calculations, I gambled that she was bluffing. "Sure, you go first," I said.

To my horror, she pulled her pants down right there underneath our table for me to see whatever there was to see. Curiosity is the better part of valor, right? Somehow, that doesn't sound right now, but it sounded right back then in the back of Mrs. Ienatsch's classroom and I took a glance.
Soon after seeing my eyes go down there, she closed up shop and coaxed me to give her a look as well with the reminder "Now it's your turn." I looked at that untamed exhibitionist right in the eyes and responded, "No way."

Oh, she surely hated me after that. The rest of the day was very awkward as was the rest of that school year. Up to that point, we were friendly with each other. After that day and for years in the future, there was definitely tension between us.

When she didn't show up for school the first day of 5th grade, I was relieved that she had finally moved. Being around the girl I lied to was torture.

So, yeah, "You go first" was a terrible decision aside from the fact that it's now a fun tale to tell.
