79th in SP+ defense rankings. They were last in the nation in returning production in 2021

5/23/22 8:31am
BYU’s offense was also bottom 10 in returning production from ‘20 to ‘21.

5/23/22 8:42am
Were you referring to the offense being last in the nation in returning production?

5/23/22 9:42am
The cool kids don't like Tuiaki because on Madden they blitzed and sacked
Blueto
5/23/22 8:36am
I hate it, but it does make sense

But it doesn’t work. More and more each year

The thing I worry about this is that our Defense is on the field much more than

BYU was 6-1 vs P5 (beat UVA, lost to Baylor) and 5-0 vs PAC 12.

CB knows our D coordinator shut down the Ute offense and won the LOS

5/23/22 8:37am
Wait, so when the defense stinks, it's on the players; but they're good, it's because of the coordinator?

Yea we did but...that was the only game all year that Tuiaki altered his

My biggest frustration are the long drives we give up. Keeps our O off the field
jigidajrit
5/23/22 8:40am
BYU's defense was on the field for 880 plays, their offense for 868. That's a difference of 0.92 plays per game.
Indy Coug
5/23/22 8:43am
That proves his point; the defense is supposed to get off the field, the offense is supposed to stay on the field
2FarGone
5/23/22 8:50am
Sorry, but if BYU is playing close to the average number of plays on offense and defense
Indy Coug
5/23/22 8:54am
BYU opponents were the 102nd "fastest" in seconds per play last year.
Indy Coug
5/23/22 9:00am
You're exposing the weakness of statistics
2FarGone
5/23/22 9:00am
BYU won a national championship running only 2.5 more plays per game than their opponents
Indy Coug
5/23/22 9:03am
You're projecting.

You fell into my trap

Explain how a team can get the ball many more times than their opponent
Blueto
5/23/22 9:18am
Ask Tuiaki: he's banking on interceptions
2FarGone
5/23/22 9:20am
An interception doesn't change the calculus of possessions. Their offense got a
Blueto
5/23/22 9:24am
This is correct. The scheme is philosophically disadvantageous. QBs that literally can't throw have career days running
shammy
5/23/22 10:12am
Don’t confuse Tuiaki haters with stats or facts
Archaea
5/23/22 9:13am
I don't think Tuiaki is without fault — I just find some of the specific criticisms not to be particularly good
Indy Coug
5/23/22 9:15am
Of course he has faults, but not as many as the haters claim.
Archaea
5/23/22 12:43pm
For the record, I don't hate him at all and really want him to succeed
2FarGone
5/23/22 9:18am
And I really, really want you apologists to be right and for me to be wrong
2FarGone
5/23/22 9:21am
I am not an apologist but a realist as to what's possible at BYU.
Archaea
5/23/22 12:44pm
We had one of the top offenses in the country and still were at a deficit. The defense is the reason.
kimdaddy35
5/23/22 9:39am
BYU led the nation in total offense in 1984 and only ran 2.5 plays per game more than their opponents
Indy Coug
5/23/22 10:03am
You make it seem like we only care about how many plays we have on offense compared to the defense
kimdaddy35
5/23/22 10:17am
Clock rules are very different now compared to 1984. For beginners, when players went out of bounds in 1984
Indy Coug
5/23/22 10:23am
Then it might surprise you to learn that the number of football plays per game has increased in that time.
kimdaddy35
5/23/22 10:29am
So. . . If we take more chances on defense
theonick
5/23/22 11:17am
I know this is difficult for some of you, but the best defenses always have the offense guessing
kimdaddy35
5/23/22 11:26am
Absolutely true. It's pathetic how obvious we are.
Goliath
5/23/22 11:38am
There's a difference between taking chances and playing solid base D.
shammy
5/23/22 11:27am
Uh ... you realize that we ranked 83rd in the nation in opponent drives that resulted in a TD right?
ManicBlue
5/23/22 2:56pm
Points per game isn't a great metric.
JuicyJam
5/23/22 8:41am
Yes it is—there are other important metrics as well but

kimdaddy35
5/23/22 9:44am
It should be, but people have their pet stats. Or they have “confirmation bias” stats that fit their desired conclusion.
mvtoro
5/23/22 10:36am
The scheme keeps our offense off the field and prevents our offense from putting opponents away
2FarGone
5/23/22 8:45am
I'm not really anti-Tuiaki, but the DC has to share blame for lack of depth
Coop
5/23/22 8:55am
I rarely felt confident that our D could get a stop when they absolutely had to. To be fair, the D did get necessary
thewaterboy
5/23/22 8:58am
The D gets the to use the injury excuse but the O doesn't for the end of year.

So, is the scheme Tuiaki's fault or Sitake's fault?

I think both. Tuiaki continues to run it, and Sitake lets him.
