You make it seem like we only care about how many plays we have on offense compared to the defense
That isn't the primary complaint. The primary complaint is that our defense is keeping our offense off of the field. Especially last year when we had one of the best ball control offenses in the country, we should have been running 80 plays per game.
Your example:
In 1984 we averaged 75.3 plays per game. In 2021 we averaged 66.9 plays per game. That is a huge difference! We have an explosive offense and need to get them on the field. Instead we are running 15% less plays and scoring 15% less points that we could with the 1984 defense.

BYU's defense was on the field for 880 plays, their offense for 868. That's a difference of 0.92 plays per game.

That proves his point; the defense is supposed to get off the field, the offense is supposed to stay on the field

I don't think Tuiaki is without fault — I just find some of the specific criticisms not to be particularly good

We had one of the top offenses in the country and still were at a deficit. The defense is the reason.

BYU led the nation in total offense in 1984 and only ran 2.5 plays per game more than their opponents
