You're exposing the weakness of statistics
The entire purpose of a defense is to 1) stop the opposing offense and 2) get your offense the ball. A defense is dominant when it is on the field for significantly less number of plays than its offense.
BYU defensive scheme requires that BYU's offense be as close to perfect as possible with every limited possession it has. It is a very selfish defensive scheme that doesn't support the team's goal as a whole.

BYU's defense was on the field for 880 plays, their offense for 868. That's a difference of 0.92 plays per game.

We had one of the top offenses in the country and still were at a deficit. The defense is the reason.

BYU led the nation in total offense in 1984 and only ran 2.5 plays per game more than their opponents
