79th in SP+ defense rankings. They were last in the nation in returning production in 2021
And they got riddled with injuries. There are more moving parts to consider than just who the coordinator is.

BYU's defense was on the field for 880 plays, their offense for 868. That's a difference of 0.92 plays per game.

We had one of the top offenses in the country and still were at a deficit. The defense is the reason.

BYU led the nation in total offense in 1984 and only ran 2.5 plays per game more than their opponents
