The Pharisees did worse things on a bigger scale, but in general, the MO of breaking big commandments (judging others, mistreating them and publicly shaming them, failing to love thy neighbor and treat everyone kindly) while straining at small things ("WHY HAIR NO SHAVEN") is exactly what the Pharisees did and exactly what Jesus called them out for. I would say a significant portion of all of Christendom is defined by this mindset right now. The HC is not productive in aligning with the principles its sponsoring institution is trying to convey.
